THE PHILOSOPHY BENEATH THE WORK

The pattern of Christ
beneath the
hero’s journey.

The hero’s journey is not a foreign myth Christians have borrowed and baptized. It is part of our Christian inheritance because it names the pattern revealed in Jesus Christ. In him we see the true journey: the Son descends in love, gives himself in sacrifice, passes through death, rises into new creation, and returns bearing life for the world. Christ is not one example of the pattern. He is its source, center, and fulfillment.

The great myths and legends endure because they echo this reality, however faintly: life is found through self-giving love; the old must die for the new to be born; what is received in transformation must be carried home as blessing. By grace, Christians are not merely spectators of Christ’s journey. We are joined to him. He calls us beyond familiar ground, leads us through surrender, conforms us to his risen life, and sends us into the world to love God and neighbor and participate in his work of making all things new.

Hero Journey receives the hero’s journey as a Christian pattern of formation and rests on four convictions about entering the pattern of Christ with the whole of our lives.

01

We are living inside a story.

God is telling a story of creation, fall, redemption, and restoration, and every man’s life unfolds within it. Our desires, wounds, relationships, responsibilities, and circumstances all belong to this larger drama. A man begins to live differently when he recognizes his life as a calling and accepts the part that has been entrusted to him.

02

Transformation requires a threshold.

Every meaningful change asks a man to leave familiar ground. He must enter uncertainty, face what he has avoided, and surrender ways of living that can no longer carry him forward. The hero’s journey gives this process a shape: departure, initiation, and return. Each man crosses the threshold himself, accompanied by brothers and guides who help him remain faithful to the road.

03

The whole man must make the journey.

God calls the whole person. Intellect, body, desire, imagination, relationships, work, authority, and spiritual life all belong to the work of formation. Hero Journey brings theology, psychology, philosophy, story, and embodied practice together so that growth can reach the foundations of a man’s life and take visible form in the way he lives.

04

The romance is his to live and his to give away.

God draws a man deeper into the romance of his own life because the man himself matters to God. His healing, freedom, joy, desire, and capacity to love matter. But the life he receives is never his alone. As he becomes more fully alive in Christ, that life overflows as presence, courage, creativity, protection, service, and blessing. His renewal and his participation in God’s renewal of the world become one movement of grace.

ABOUT IAN PRATT

My life has taken me
to some unlikely places.

I’ve drunk blood and milk on the floor of a dirt hut in Africa and consulted for global hospitality brands from an overwater bungalow in the Maldives. I’ve been chased by elephants along the Nile and by sex traffickers in Phnom Penh. I’ve washed the feet of witch doctors in Uganda and coached CEOs in corporate America. I’ve traveled through war zones, eaten with refugees, built businesses, led community organizations, and spent twenty years leading men’s ministries and retreats.

It has been a strange and wonderful life.

Along the way, I’ve seen extraordinary courage in the face of evil, sacrificial love swallow up darkness, and God renew entire communities through ordinary men and women. I believe formation opens into mission: God forms us so that we can join him in setting the world right-side up again. My mission is to awaken and equip brothers and sisters for that calling.

These days, most of my adventures happen closer to home. My wife and I live near Nashville, where we are raising three brave young boys and a baby girl. We share life with young families who want to raise bold and audacious followers of Christ. We dream of revival beginning around dinner tables, during bedtime prayers, on family adventures, and through the ordinary work of loving one another well.

Hero Journey grew from this calling.

After all the miles and unlikely places, the heart of my work is simple: I love people. I love helping them find their way back to a deep and abiding love for God, for their people, and for the story God is inviting them to tell with their lives.

The Eternal Romance by Ian Pratt

THE VISION BEHIND HERO JOURNEY

The Eternal Romance

Every human soul longs for a life that matters.

We want more than success; we want a life of meaning. A life deeply rooted in reality, animated by purpose, and connected to some good that transcends our struggles and griefs.

The Eternal Romance explores the great Christian story—not as a collection of ideas to believe, but as the true adventure into which every human life has been invited. It is a story available to those who have eyes to see and ears to hear, unfolding in every ordinary moment.

This is the vision that underlies everything we do at Hero Journey.

If you long for a faith that can make the ordinary feel enchanted, the difficult feel meaningful, and your life feel like an adventure worth living, this book is for you. If you want your days to be filled with both romance and adventure—not as fleeting emotions, but as a way of seeing the world—this book is an invitation to come home.
